Cortes are hand woven in fine cotton with a foot loom. The operation of the foot loom is traditionally done by men, unlike the huipils which are most commonly woven by women. The cortes are woven in panels and then each panel is stitched together by hand and often adorned with a randa. Threads used can be tie dyed before weaving and create complex patterns of people, animals and other symbols.
